The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Respondent in an ICSID arbitration initiated by Société des Parcs d’Alger and Emirates International Investment Company LLC (ICSID Case No. ARB/18/11). The dispute arose from a contract for the development of a USD 5 billion urban park project.
E.P., Respondent, in three parallel NAI arbitrations in Amsterdam against Exem Energy B.V., a holding company beneficially owned by Isabel dos Santos. The dispute relates to high-profile matters of embezzlement, corruption and money-laundering in relation to a joint venture agreement. Dutch and Angolan law apply. Sonangol has enjoyed a complete victory in both the emergency proceeding brought by Exem Energy B.V., as well as in the main NAI arbitration, in which the Tribunal upheld Sonangol’s counterclaims, finding that Isabel dos Santos had engaged in “grand corruption”. As a result of the Tribunal’s decision, Sonangol will be restored to its position as 100% shareholder of Esperaza Holding B.V.
Angola, Respondent in an SCC arbitration initiated by Mr. Carlos Manuel de São Vicente under the Portugal-Angola BIT. The dispute relates to an emergency relief for the release of the pre-trial detention and lifting of a seizure on assets in Angola’s hospitality industry.
